Wojnarowski: Carmelo Prefers Rockets?

Via Yahoo

Anthony has hesitated to sign a three-year, $65 million extension and expressed intrigue with opting out of his contract next summer to become a free agent. Despite significant speculation the New York Knicks are the team that Anthony would most likely want to join, two sources close to him insisted the Knicks have been overstated as an object of his desire. Privately, Anthony has expressed more enthusiasm over joining the Houston Rockets than the Knicks, sources said.

Every day this looks more and more like a LeBron 2.0. In the past twenty-four hours, reputable reports suggest the Clippers, Rockets, and obviously the Knicks are front-runners in this “sweepstakes”. Personally, I feel as if the media is playing us again. They can say whatever they want and they know we’ll buy it. As fans, we’re vulnerable.

Want you guys to realize that I’m not just googling “Carmelo Anthony free agency”. I feel it’s necessary to present the different options Melo has and from that, you can deduct your own opinion on where he is going.

UPDATE (10:25 AM):

Not really news per se, but reputable, and often insightful, Alan Hahn of Newsday tweets this:

The HOU over NYK talk comes from the fact that the Knicks have little to offer right now and therefore would have to wait. Don’t get played

After his reporting during this past summer I could care less what Adrian Wojnarowski has to say about anything Knicks related.

It’s funny, I felt that way too right up until July 8… and then I realized he was right about a lot of what he said regarding LeBron.

  • BigBlueAL

Sure but all the straight ripping of the Knicks during the entire process including that horrible part he wrote about Donnie Walsh in his wheel chair and then taking that part of the article down without ever publicly apologizing made me lose all respect for him.

This is a complete joke. I’m sure Carmelo Anthony is dying to team up with Aaron Brooks and Kevin Martin instead of his best buddy Amare Stoudemire. I love when the media flat out makes up stuff. Who are they going to trade to get him even? They have a bunch of picks and the underwhelming Jordan Hill. What am I missing?

Picks, Trade Exception, Expiring Contracts from Jefferies and Battier, Jordan Hill, Chase Budinger, Aaron Brooks or Kevin Martin would be part of the deal. Any of those is what they have to offer…not all of them, but any combination of them. That’s a hell of a lot more than any other team that he’s interested in can offer. Oh and they aren’t rebuilding….they’re already a contender. So yeah, you are missing quite a bit.

Gotta love Alan’s tweet… always a positive outlook for us diehards. Personally, Daryl Morey has played his cards right for a very long time but this doesn’t mean that Carmelo would instantly choose them over us. As long as he doesn’t sign that extension, he’s got leverage so we won’t fully know until later on. If I were a betting man, I would say the Knicks are still the favorite. D’antoni trumps Adelman any day of the week.

The Rockets do have a lot to offer, but the Clippers are in a very good position as well. Two scary teams that the Knicks better hope don’t “interfere” with Melo.

Carmelo has made it abundantly clear where his top choice is. Even if he does get traded to either of those teams, there is no guarantee that he will sign that extension that Denver is trying to use as a bargaining chip. I doubt Carmelo wants to be locked down long term to a team that has Donald Sterling as an owner. He makes James Dolan look like a competent owner who knows what he’s somewhat doing. Plus, I think that Clipper curse will find its way to Melo’s knees.

Morey has the assets, but he’s gotta be worried about Yao and his retirement talk. Once he figures that out, then he can figure out the pieces to put around Yao. At the end of the day Yao>Melo. Other than that, Morey is the one GM who if he was in your fantasy league, you would never trade with him. Denver also has a bunch of similar pieces. A Brooks (who is severly under rated…IMO the second best shooter, off the dribble, from distance in the league behind Nash + he led the league in 3 pt makes), Scola and Martin are similar pieces to what Denver already has. Plus…Denver has no GM and is in no rush.
